SHOP USING YOUR CHIP CARD.

Making purchases with your chip card is easy and now more secure. Instead of signing for what you buy, all you have to do is enter your unique PIN.

Here’s how it works:
  1. Insert your card into the chip terminal, with the chip first and facing up.
  2. Follow any prompts, including entering your PIN.
  3. When prompted, take your receipt and remove your card.

On your first in-store chip transaction, you may be asked to sign. The merchant will let you know if this is needed.

You may not always need to use your PIN:

  • If a store doesn’t have a chip terminal, you’ll still be able to use the mag stripe on the back of your card and sign for your purchase
  • When using PayPass, you won’t need to enter a PIN. If the dollar amount is above $50, you may be asked to sign
  • When travelling to a country that doesn’t currently offer chip (like the U.S.), you’ll need to use the mag stripe and sign for your purchase
  • When shopping online or over the phone, you should never be asked for your PIN

Whether you enter a PIN or sign for your purchase, you’re always protected by our $0 fraud liability – that means you won’t pay for any unauthorized purchases on your card.
